Food Tasting # 11: Center Table Catering

Last Sunday morning, my family and I went to the Pergola in Pasay for Center Table Catering's grand food tasting. I have been hearing good feedbacks about this caterer, and when I saw their packages, I thought that while their rates are a bit over our budget, they are still relatively affordable.

We liked Center Table's setup in the venue because it was simple yet classy. Candelabras partnered with flowers were the centerpieces of each table, but all these will come with a fee because they are all upgrades. The standard centerpieces are the usual flowers on low vases, but I still find them cute. The drapes were a nice touch of elegance too. Minimalist brides would likely fall in love with this kind of styling.

Now on to the food tasting! I apologize for the crappy pictures though, especially for the main viands. I have to make use of my phone's camera because I forgot my digicam. Plus, I am a sucky photographer; the nicer pics were taken by my younger brother. Boo him for having the photography skills. Haha!

For starters, we had the Heart of Artichoke Dip with Bread Sticks & Crackers and the Nachos with Tomato Salsa, Beef & Cheese Sauce. Jocco and I loved the heart of artichoke dip because it has the right creaminess, right saltiness, right everything! Heck, we even loved the bread sticks even without the dip. Who would have thought that a simple appetizer like this can taste so sinfully delicious? We thought the nachos were quite okay, but my mother still thought her nachos were better. Sige na nga, pagbigyan na. Haha!

For refreshments, I got the Raspberry Iced Tea, Jocco got the Green Tea Apple Iced Tea, while my parents got the Lemon Iced Tea. I couldn't comment on the lemon iced tea because I wasn't able to taste it, but I could say that I liked the green iced tea better than the raspberry iced tea. Surprisingly, the green tea apple iced tea (wow, so many "teas" in that name) had no bitter taste commonly associated with green tea drinks. It was not too sickeningly sweet either; it was quite a refreshing treat. The raspberry iced tea, on the other hand, was a pale comparison to K by Cunanan's version, which may possibly be THE BEST RASPBERRY ICED TEA EVAAAH! Yes, that phrase deserves an all-caps moment.

We then went to the soup station to get our soups: Sopa de Pamplina and Zuppa Toscana. Zuppa toscana was italian sausage, potatoes, onion and spinach all together in a creamy chicken broth. It looked liked sinigang without the sourness. Unfortunately, it lacked all other flavors as well; it was just so bland. I liked the sopa de pamplina better because it was creamy and filled with vegetables, beef and chicken. I guess I just have a bias for thick and creamy soups.

For their salad selections, we had the Chicken Sicilian Salad and Tuna Macaroni Salad. The chicken salad has the usual leafy greens, chicken strips, mangoes and grapes, but I love their Sicilian dressing. It tasted just like a sweeter version of the Thousand Island dressing, which is my favorite dressing for green salads. The tuna salad was also sweet, but the saltiness of the tuna was able to balance the flavor of the dish so there was no umay factor.

For their pasta dishes, we had the Spaghetti Carbonara and the Cappellinni alla Puttanesca. Since I’m a fan of creamy white sauce on pasta, I thought that I'd love their carbonara but I was sorely disappointed. It was very bland and not as creamy as I'd like it to be. In fact, the little flavor that the noodles had would disappear as soon as you'd put a spoonful of it in your mouth. Surprisingly, I liked the puttanesca better because of its salty and spicy taste.

For the veggies, we were served the Baked Creamy Sour Cream Potatoes and Blanched Fresh Asparagus with Melted Cheese and Mushroom Sauce. I don’t usually eat mashed potatoes, but I thought Center Table’s sour cream potatoes were delicious. Whoever thought of adding sour cream to the mashed potatoes was a genius! Others might find this dish too creamy to the point of being nakakaumay, but I find that eating the potatoes with rice can offset the creaminess a bit. I hated the blanched fresh asparagus though because the melted cheese and mushroom sauce couldn’t disguise the bland, veggie taste of the asparagus. Yuck!

Our beef selections for the day were Roast Beef with Pan Gravy & Buttered Vegetables and Lengua con Champignon. Out of the two, I liked the lengua better because the meat is so soft and tender! And I mean melt-in-your-mouth tender! Heck, I didn’t even have to chew the meat for it to go down my throat. The mushroom butter sauce was also savory and delectable. However, the roast beef didn’t quite meet my expectations because I found the meat bland and too tough to chew. The sauce was the only thing giving flavor to the dish, but I thought it was too salty.

For our chicken entrees, we were served the Garlic Infused Roasted Chicken and the Boneless Chicken Barbecue. I had the chicken barbecue and I thought that it was really quite ordinary, not like something you would serve in a wedding. The meat was dry and the some parts of the chicken skin were even burned. My mom could cook even better chicken barbecue than this. I couldn’t really comment on the garlic chicken since I only took one bite, but Jocco said it was delicious.

For our seafood dishes, we had Eastern Shrimp Rolls with Sweet Chili Sauce and River Cobbler Fillet with Tartar Sauce, which were cooked on the spot during the food tasting. I loved the river cobbler fillet because the fish was sweet and tender. Center Table was also very generous with its portions because each fillet was thick and juicy. I can still taste the fish with every bite, even with the coating of bread crumbs.

However, I could not say the same with the shrimp rolls. Looks can definitely be deceiving because while the whole roll looked so thick and full, you can barely taste the shrimp in it. Imagine eating lumpiang shanghai without its fillings, just the shell. That’s how it felt eating the shrimp rolls. And to think that I love shrimps. It was just so disappointing.

What I liked best about Center Table's food tasting was its dessert bar! I literally couldn't wait to get my hands (and teeth) on the desserts. With more than 10 sweets around me, I was floating in desserts heaven. Hehe. We had Creme Puff, Chocolate Eclair, Tiramisu, Buko Pandan Salad, Blueberry Cheesecake, Creme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse, Mango Bar, Mango Mousse, Fresh Fruit Pannacotta and Mango Crepe.

Out of all these desserts, the clear winner for me is the crème brulee. The custard was delectable—creamy and not too sickeningly sweet. My family also kept raving about this dish; my dad even got two cups of crème brulee! Although I think they must have burned the sugar a bit too much because the hard caramel on top was slightly bitter. But other than that, the crème brulee was one of our favorites for the day. The chocolate mousse and the chocolate éclair were also delicious, but others might think they are too sweet. I’ve always thought that tiramisus have a hard biscuit layer in it. Center Table’s tiramisu was literally a cake because it was so soft and fluffy albeit still yummy.

For the desserts with fruits though, we were quite disappointed with Center Table’s offerings. Jocco didn’t finish his blueberry cheesecake because he found the cheese too overpowering. He said it was as if he was literally eating a block of cheese. Nakakaumay daw. I did thought their buko pandan salad was okay, but I still liked Ma Del’s buko pandan jello better. Wala na atang tatalo dun eh. The rest of the desserts—mango bar, mango mousse, fresh fruit pannacotta and mango crepe—also received a thumbs down from us because most of the fruits used were sour and probably out of season, which affected the overall taste of the desserts. Maybe if the fruits were sweeter, then our rating would probably change.

VERDICT:  I had mixed feelings about our experience with Center Table. While I liked their styling, I wasn’t that satisfied with their food. There were more misses than hits during their food tasting. Plus, their quotation was over our budget because our AE told us they couldn’t slash off the whole 12% VAT for legal reasons. The most that they could give is a 6% discount. Sayang, taking off the 12% VAT can be a huge help for budgeted brides like me.

Confessions of a Food Tasting Addict

Food tastings are and will always be my most favorite part of our wedding preps. It is always a delight to sample all those delectable dishes for free, take pictures of them, and blog about them like some sort of aspiring food critic. But I had to think of different ways on how to say "delicious" and "not so delicious" without sounding like a broken record. Haha!

Of course, the main point of all these food tastings is to find the perfect caterer that would fit our very limited budget. So the coming weeks are jampacked with food tastings with different caterers to see whether or not we would have the this-is-it feeling with one of them:
  • July 29, Sunday - Center Table Catering
  • July 29, Sunday - Patio de Tata  Roque
  • August 3, Friday - NE Catering
  • August 10, Friday - CVJ Catering
  • August 10, Friday - Richgold Weddings
  • August 17, Friday - Kusina ni Kambal

Ooooh, I'm so excited! Kebs na lang sa diet! Haha!

Budget Revisions Part 2

Our wedding is still 1 year and 9 months away, and yet I have already made some significant progress in our wedding plans. So after booking some of our major suppliers, I checked our budget plan to see whether we're still within our projected budget. Lo and behold, I had to do some revisions in our wedding budget once again. And no, I couldn't cut down on our costs this time; instead I had to increase our budget to accommodate additional expenses. Oh no!

First, I had to increase our budget for our church because we decided to book an airconditioned church instead of our original choice. Then we decided to book a nicer hotel for our wedding preps and add an extra night for after the wedding. I also included the expenses for both our prenup with Osep&Mimi and the free prenup that we've won from Aisle 1401's promo.

Here is the the total breakdown of our revised projected wedding budget:
  • Church - P20,000
  • Reception Venue - P15,000
  • Photo - P35,000
  • Video - P35,000
  • Caterer - P90,000
  • OTD Coordinator - P15,000
  • Wedding Attire - P25,000
  • Hair and Makeup - P14,000
  • Hotel for Preps - P15,000
  • Wedding Rings - P7,000
  • Stationery - P5,000
  • Flowers - FREE
  • Souvenirs - P7,000
  • Entertainment - P25,000
  • Lights and Sounds - P8,000
  • Alcohol - P5,000
  • Dessert Bar - P4,000
  • Bridal Car - FREE
  • LCD Projector and Screen - FREE
  • Prenup Pictorial with NYO Images - P5,000
  • Prenup Pictorial with Osep&Mimi - P15,000
  • Miscellaneous Fees - P25,000
GRAND TOTAL: P370,000

I didn't include our flowers, bridal car and LCD projector and screen to our wedding budget. That's because we plan to use my blue Vios for our bridal car, while Mox has his own LCD projector and screen that we can use in the reception. These alone will save us at least P8,000! As for the flowers, I plan to make fabric flowers for all our entourage's corsages and even my bridal bouquet. The materials needed for the DIYs will be charged to my personal credit card account so that wouldn't be counted in our budget. Hehe.

We also didn't include our honeymoon into the budget plan because right now, I'm crossing my fingers that someone would shoulder our honeymoon expenses as a wedding gift. Haha! But seriously, the honeymoon is not an immediate matter as for now. We could always postpone it until we have enough savings to plan the trip.

I don't know if I'm still considered a budgeted bride considering that our projected budget is almost P400,000. All I can say is at least we have booked a photographer, videographer, OTD coordinator and HMUA that is still within our set budget. I just hope we would be able to keep up with this good fortune while we're booking the rest of our suppliers, and that our budget would not go beyond the P400,000 mark.

It's a must to stick to our wedding budget!

Food Tasting # 10: Passion Cooks

*This is now my 10th food tasting entry. Wow, food tasting is now becoming an addiction. Haha.*

Last Friday, Cyndee and Cris, two of my fellow batchmates in W@W, joined me during my food tasting with Maja of Passion Cooks. We have been dying to meet with each other ever since we learned that we are all excited 2014 brides, and this food tasting gave us an excuse to meet up. I'll talk more about our-mini EB and in a later post. For now, let's focus on the most important part: the food!

I have been hearing raves about Passion Cooks from brides everywhere. I love looking at their Facebook account for pictures of their clients' weddings because the styling is superb. Every wedding has a unique element to it; Maja and her team makes sure that no wedding would look exactly alike despite the common themes. Passion Cooks gives perfect attention to every detail to fully showcase the couple's motif or theme. And let's not forget the food! My mouth just watered while reading their menu offerings; everything sounds so delicious and extraordinary! :)

Of course, all that good quality comes with a hefty price tag. Right from the start, I knew that Passion Cooks was out of our budget. However, I just couldn't resist the lure to schedule a food tasting with them. I really wanted to taste their food to see if they truly deserve all that great feedback. Plus if we really do like them, maybe I could convince Mox to stretch our budget so that we could afford them.

We were served fewer dishes than usual during our food tasting because Maja said that since our wedding is still in 2014, there could be changes in their menu by then. We only had one salad, two main entrees (chicken and seafood), and two desserts.

Oriental Salad
For our salad, we had their best-selling Oriental Salad. This salad is filled with assorted fresh greens topped with crispy catfish and drizzled with mango-tomato salsa. It may look like the normal ensalada dish, but its main selling point is the crispy catfish toppings. Janelle, our AE, said you have to mix the catfish with the greens, mangoes and salsa to truly enjoy the flavors of the dish. The catfish's salty taste is the perfect complement to the salsa's tangy flavor. However, the salsa on our salad was too sour that it overpowered the saltiness of the catfish. Cyndee agreed with me but Cris liked it because she loves anything that is sour. Haha.

Chicken and Ham Crepe
We were then served chicken for our first main course. The Chicken and Ham Crepe is Passion Cook's version of the Chicken Cordon Bleu. Chicken, ham and cheddar cheese is rolled up in a sweet crepe and topped with gravy sauce. I love the crepe's crunchy texture. Partner it with the gravy sauce and it's as if you're eating the skin of your favorite Jollibee Chickenjoy. That's how crispy the crepe is. My only complaint was that the gravy sauce was not enough to satisfy my craving. Haha.

Baked Prawns Thermidor
Our last main course was a seafood dish: Baked Prawns Thermidor. They served us three large prawns stuffed with ham and mushrooms and topped with cheese and cream. I was excited to taste this dish because one, I love prawns, and two, I have been hearing raves about this dish. And true enough, it did not disappoint. I love its rich, creamy flavor; you can taste the prawn, ham, mushroom and cheese in every bite. Some may find the cheese and cream too overpowering though, but I love it. Hehe. Since there were the three of us during the food tasting, they served us one prawn each. Again, one prawn was not enough for me, but Janelle told us that they would serve the guests two prawns during the reception proper. Kaya hindi sila mabibitin.

Mango Cream Pie and Chocolate Lazy Cake
Now to the favorite part of the food tasting: DESSERTS! We were served two desserts, the Mango Cream Pie and the Chocolate Lazy Cake. The lazy cake is not your usual soft, moist chocolate cake; it is actually sweet biscuits rolled in milk chocolate syrup. Since they are biscuits, it can be a bit difficult to slice off a piece of the cake with your spoon. But I'm ready to overlook that fact because the cake is so delicious! The syrup has the right amount of sweetness in itnot too bitter nor too sickeningly sweet.

But the real winner for me is the mango cream pie. It may seem like the usual frozen dessertlayers of mangoes, crushed graham crackers and cream mixed together in a shot glass—but the mango cream pie is nothing but ordinary when it comes to its taste. The cream is sweet, but it does not overpower the natural sweetness of the mangoes, while the graham crackers balances the overall creaminess of the dessert. I particularly love the scoop of mango on top. At first I thought it was a lemon, which was put purely for aesthetic purposes, but no, it was really a scoop of mango. What a pleasant surprise. :)

VERDICT: Again, Passion Cooks is way out of our budget. Their cheapest package starts at P850 and they don't allow price locks for 2014. So that P850 can increase to up to P900! Plus, Janelle said that the styling that we usually see in their pictures in Facebook are all upgraded setups. The upgrade fee depends on the pegs that we will show them, but it usually starts at P10,000 and reaches to up to P70,000! Of course, Passion Cooks can customize their menu to suit your budget, but still, I really couldn't afford them, lest I want our budget to hit the P500,000 mark. :(

Mismatched Bridesmaid Dresses

Gone were the days when bridesmaids wear gowns with the same design and color. The trend now is is having mismatched entourage dresses, where all the bridesmaids wear the same colored gowns but with different necklines. Sometimes the bride shoulders the cost of the gowns, while others let the entourage pay for their dresses. The bride would just give the cloth for the dresses or find an affordable dressmaker to sew the gowns.

At first I thought that I'd like to have my bridesmaids wear my chosen designs for them. But I've heard a lot of horror stories about pasaway bridesmaids who'd complain about their gowns or would have trouble with the schedule of the measurement-taking. I don't want to experience that source of stress during our wedding preps. Plus, I  have no idea if my chosen designs would look good on all of them since they all have different body types. I really don't trust my limited fashion sense. Haha!

And so I thought of having mismatched bridesmaid dresses, but with a twist! I'd let them wear gowns that have different necklines AND different shades of color. That way, my entourage would have the freedom to choose their gown for my wedding. They can have it tailor-made to whatever design they'd like or they can just buy off the rack. Their gowns don't have to match; my only requirement for them is to have a turquoise cocktail dress, or at least a gown in that shade. This is the look that I'm going for.

See how pretty and happy they look? I love how the dresses give a variety of colors in the picture. It's a refreshing break from the usual bridesmaids-wearing-the-same-dress thing. Having mismatched gowns also gives a fun and laidback vibe, which is exactly what I want for my wedding. Plus, it makes my life much easier because my bridesmaids will be the ones who'll pick and pay for their gowns. Less stress and hassle equals one happy bride! :)

Here are my other favorite pegs for mismatched bridesmaid gowns.

Some brides take the mismatched gown trend even further by having their bridesmaids wear gowns in different colors all together! Think of it as a rainbow effect. It's just so chic and cool! :)
